The Scarlet Pimpernel
by Baroness Emmuska Orczy
The Scarlet Pimpernel is about a man who travels Europe rescuing French aristocrats from the Reign of Terror. It's very well written. The hero is like a less-violent version of Batman. A swashbuckling story told from a wife's perspective. An interesting twist and well told! Karen Savage, who does the Librivox recorded version of this book is simply spectacular! She's worth hearing, whatever you think of the book!.
Prior to reading this book, the only notion of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" I had, was of the swashbuckling Daffy Duck playing this same character in a Looney Tunes cartoon! The cartoon was great and so is this book. It takes place during the 'Time of Terror' of the French Revolution and tells of a cunning Englishman who defies the revolutionaries as he attempts to save aristocrats from the blade of the guillotine. A thoroughly enjoyable story!
