The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa
by Anonymous
The Mahabharata is one of ancient India's major epic poems written in Sanskrit, the other being the Ramayana. Together they might be seen as the Iliad and Odyssey of the East, though the Mahabharata alone is about 10 times as long as the two Greek epics combined.
The narrative is of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandavas people, but it contains much of the philosophical and moral elements of the Indian tradition as well. At 1.8 million words, the Mahabharata is is truly an epic epic: so if you've say, broken a leg and have a month on the mend, this would be a great read.
