The Inferno is an allegorical poem by Dante Alighieri featuring the poet as himself as he travels through the 9 circles of hell. He's guided by the Roman poet Virgil, who shows him each group of sinners who is suffering in agony according to his various crimes against God. The Inferno is the first of three parts of Dante Alighieri's epic trilogy the Divine Comedy, but the Inferno stands out as the most lasting and popular.

Why? Because everyone loves a bit of fire and brimstone in the morning. The vast influence of this work on the Western canon is immeasurable: there isn't enough room to describe its literary reach. I mean they even made an Inferno video game on X-Box for Pete's sake.
