Every century has its own spirit that characterizes it. The spirit of ours seems to be that of freedom. The first attack on superstition was violent, without measure. Once men have dared in any way to storm the barrier of religion, this most formidable barrier that exists as the most respected, it is impossible to stop. As soon as they turn menacing looks against the majesty of heaven, they will not miss the next moment to direct them against the sovereignty of the earth.
